Before the Restoration

Here are some photos of the cemetery during a ground-clearing and exploration visit several years ago (before 2012).

During the Restoration

  • March 2014 – Construction has begun! The land has been cleared and all the graves exposed. You can really get an idea of the size of the cemetery and how many unknown graves there might be.
  • July 2014 – Construction of the Delaware City Branch Canal Trail has begun. This trail will connect Delaware City with the Mike Castle Trail along the C&D Canal. The trail will run between the branch canal and the cemetery, and provide protection from the canal water and tides.
  • November 2014 – The cemetery has been sodded. Now you can finally see what it probably looked like when it was in use. During the sodding project several more stones were found that might mark unknown graves. The Friends visited the cemetery with a consultant; we discussed a possible film project about the history of the cemetery and how important the cemetery was to the community of Polktown.

Delaware City Day

The Friends had a booth at Delaware City Day this year. We made several new friends and talked about the cemetery to everyone who walked by.

Friends Raiser 2012

We held a “friends raiser” at the Delaware City Library Community Room to raise awareness of the cemetery, make some new friends and see some old ones, and to learn about the progress we are making.
